Whaler's Rest

An 1890s sea captain's house, reimagined

Location Provincetown, MA
Completed 2024
Type Renovation
Size 2,200 sq ft

Complete gut renovation of an 1890s sea captain's house in Provincetown's historic district. Every exterior detail — windows, clapboard profiles, trim proportions — was approved by the Historic District Commission. Inside, the home was reimagined for modern living.

An open kitchen-living area, radiant floor heating, spray foam insulation, and a rooftop deck with views of the Pilgrim Monument and harbor. The original wide-plank pine floors were carefully restored where possible and matched with reclaimed stock where replacement was necessary.

Navigating the Historic District Commission review required 14 months of design revisions and three formal presentations. The result is a home that honors its maritime heritage while delivering 21st-century comfort.

We renovated a historic home in Provincetown and German navigated the Historic District Commission process flawlessly. The result honors the home's cedar shingle heritage while being completely modern inside. We survived our first Cape Cod winter storm without a single draft.
